A shared foundation for learning across the health-technology life cycle

The evidence.academy is a learning platform for professionals and organisations working with health technologies across research, development, assessment, implementation, use and reassessment.

Our purpose is to make specialised knowledge, methods and practical experience accessible through structured online courses, workshops, learning resources and institutional programmes.

We focus on evidence-informed practice across the Life Cycle of Health Technologies 2.0 — from identifying health needs to generating real-world evidence and reassessing technologies in use.

Why evidence.academy

Health-technology decisions rely on knowledge that is often distributed across organisations, disciplines, sectors and stages of development.

Public authorities, health technology assessment bodies, researchers, healthcare professionals, innovators, industry and other stakeholders each contribute important expertise. Yet their work is often organised in separate processes, institutional settings and areas of responsibility.

The evidence.academy provides a shared learning environment for understanding these connections.

Our courses help learners explore how health needs, innovation, evidence generation, regulation, implementation, real-world use and reassessment relate to one another. Rather than treating individual stages in isolation, we support a horizontal perspective across the health-technology ecosystem.

Our framework

The evidence.academy is structured around the Life Cycle of Health Technologies 2.0.

The framework understands the life cycle not simply as the development and use of a product, but as a continuous process of knowledge generation, application and learning across the health system.

It connects six interrelated phases:

PhaseFocus
NeedsIdentifying and prioritising health needs, burdens, risks and system demands
IdeaRecognising and describing emerging technologies and potential solutions
ResearchGenerating early evidence on feasibility, safety, mechanisms and potential value
DevelopmentBuilding and validating technologies using phase-appropriate evidence standards
ImplementationSupporting adoption, reimbursement and health-service readiness
UsageGenerating real-world evidence, reassessing value and feeding learning back into future priorities

A continuous knowledge-generation loop connects these phases. Evidence generated in one part of the life cycle can inform future research, implementation, reassessment and the identification of new health needs.

The framework was described in the 2026 article “From product to knowledge: the life cycle of health technologies 2.0 as a framework for health system improvement” in Frontiers in Pharmacology.

Developed by a global community of practice

The evidence.academy builds on knowledge, methods and practical experience developed through the EuroScan International Network e.V., also known as international HealthTechScan (EuroScan/i-HTS).

EuroScan/i-HTS is a global network of publicly funded organisations and individual experts working in early awareness, horizon scanning, health technology assessment, reassessment, health policy and innovation.

Through international exchange and collaborative methodological development, members contribute specialised knowledge informed by their local mandates, professional experience and health-system contexts.

The network supports knowledge exchange, capacity building, methodological development, early awareness and reassessment activities. It provides access to tools, reporting templates, publications, training materials, working groups and shared expertise.

How evidence.academy is organised

The evidence.academy is hosted and managed by i-HTScience V.o.G., the not-for-profit scientific institute and project-management platform supporting EuroScan/i-HTS activities.

i-HTScience supports scientific, methodological and training activities, as well as collaborative projects and cross-border cooperation. It provides the organisational infrastructure through which the evidence.academy can host and deliver structured educational materials and training programmes.

The relationship between the three elements can be understood as follows:

Organisation or platformPrimary role
EuroScan / international HealthTechScan (i-HTS)International network and source of member expertise, methods, experience and collaborative learning
i-HTScience V.o.G.Not-for-profit scientific institute, project-management platform and host of the evidence.academy
evidence.academyLearning platform providing structured courses, workshops, resources and capacity-building programmes

The evidence.academy translates selected learning materials, methods and expertise developed by EuroScan/i-HTS members and contributing subject-matter experts into accessible, life-cycle-based education.

Who we work with

The evidence.academy is designed for people and organisations with responsibilities across the health-technology ecosystem, including:

  • Public authorities and health ministries.
  • Health technology assessment bodies.
  • Horizon-scanning and early-awareness organisations.
  • Researchers and academic institutions.
  • Healthcare providers and health-service organisations.
  • Regulatory, reimbursement and market-access professionals.
  • Innovators, developers and industry teams.
  • Patient, citizen and public-interest organisations.
  • Students and early-career professionals working in related fields.

Our aim is not to replace local responsibilities, institutional mandates or professional expertise. Instead, we support shared understanding, structured learning and constructive exchange across boundaries.

Learning formats

The evidence.academy offers different ways to learn and build capacity:

FormatPurpose
Online coursesSelf-paced courses for individual learners, with defined learning objectives, structured modules and completion records
SCORM learning packagesCourse content that can be deployed through an organisation’s own SCORM-compatible learning-management system
Facilitated workshopsOnline, in-person or hybrid sessions for teams, agencies, institutions and collaborative groups
Institutional programmesStructured learning pathways, cohort access and tailored programmes for organisations
Learning resourcesToolkits, methods, glossaries, reading materials and supporting resources where available

Academic and methodological quality

The evidence.academy aims to make the basis and development of its learning materials transparent.

For each course, we aim to identify:

  • The academic lead and relevant contributors.
  • Institutional affiliations, where applicable.
  • Intended audience and learning level.
  • Learning objectives and estimated duration.
  • Relevant Life Cycle of Health Technologies 2.0 phase or phases.
  • Evidence sources, further reading and methodological references.
  • Date of publication or last update.
  • Review status and relevant disclosures of interests, where applicable.

Course materials are subject to editorial and methodological review before publication. We review and update content when relevant evidence, methods, policy developments, regulatory requirements or technical standards change.

Our commitment

We are committed to education that is:

  • Evidence-informed — grounded in transparent methods, relevant sources and critical reflection.
  • Practice-oriented — connected to real institutional roles, decision processes and implementation contexts.
  • Internationally informed — drawing on knowledge and experience from different health-system settings.
  • Transparent — clear about authorship, source material, institutional roles and limitations.
  • Collaborative — designed to connect specialised perspectives without erasing important differences.
  • Accessible — continuously improving the accessibility, usability and clarity of our website and learning materials.
